My fate was sealed a long time ago, embedded between pairs of nucleotides and lived out by way of chemical reaction. In fact our functions as human beings all rely on complex chemical reactions inside our body. They propel us forward, creating our life. Without them we are nothing, but a composition of cells combined in an intricately beautiful way. A code created by random chance, passed down from generation to generation. Isn’t that all life is, action potentials? A rush of sodium ions, a release of a neurotransmitter in response. What does that make us? Computers? Or are we more complex than that? These things we don’t seem to have total control of. Perhaps we are our hopes, our dreams, our efforts. Not the cells on the outside, but rather the ones on the inside. The parts that tell us what to do, and when to do it.
